
Work environments become a forgotten normal no matter how extreme or unique they might be in the grand scheme of things. It wasn’t until a friend casually mentioned how often we observe our coaching performances at the gym that I realized there’s a unique dynamic at DEUCE that’s been normalized here, which is… not normal.
But, should it be?
What I’m talking about is being observed. Simple, but rare. Think about doing any craft. Whether it’s formatting an Excel file, doing ceramics, or fixing your car. For most, having a dedicated observer to watch your process, decision making, and actions would feel vulnerable, even awkward.
There’s power in being observed.
The way we use observation is with the intention of developing excellence. It requires vulnerability to be witnessed and ultimately critiqued. And, these are the exact reasons why being observed is rare.
If you scan your lifestyle and find that being observed is not in your practice, I’d greatly encourage it. It’s delivered us endless progression and the only cost is a little vulnerability.
