OPINION: Ask Your Developing Intuition First

I once was in a jiu jitsu training session with someone on his very first day. I empathize with how overwhelming and disorienting being new at jiu jitsu can be. So, it made sense when it came time to spar (or practice a real fight) that the new student asked, “What do I do?”

The professor asked, “Do you have any siblings?”

“Yes.”

“Great. Wrestle him like he’s your sibling.”

That one cue initiated a biological treasure trove of intuition. It was brilliant.

There’s this adult phenomenon to become detached to ourselves. Maybe we trust external instructions and orders more than our own intuition. Maybe in a weird reversal of focus there’s something to gain by first asking our intuition what we ought to do.

Step 2: develop and refine your intuition!

Keep going.
