When it comes down to it, any fitness modality or style could be described as task completion. You can complete the task of Tree Pose in yoga or straddle press to handstand in gymnastics, but in many instances task completion as a focus ignores important technique and nuance.
Strongman training is a masterclass in task completion.
Whereas focusing on doing whatever it takes to get the barbell over your head in the clean and jerk would likely pull a student away from what any coach would like to see in his/her movement, there’s something to be said about task completion when the adversity of the type of implement is such a profound factor.
In strongman training, the implements are notoriously odd, oversized, lack opportunities for grip, etc. In these instances, the black and white-ness of completing or not completing the task of loading a heavy keg like in the image above is as good of a teacher as any.
One of the beauties of strongman training is the directness of the feedback provided by an implement that provides its own unique challenge to solve. Students are encouraged to overcome this adversity to find a way (any way!) to complete the task at hand.
