There’s one place where old is much better than new. It’s in the world of ideas. If you’ve read a good amount of the more than 3,000 articles here, the name Nassim Taleb is not new to you. Taleb is an options trader turned philosopher, author. His wisdom transcends mathematics and finance and that’s why he’s getting a shout out here.
In one of his books, Aphorisms, Rules, and Heuristics, he lists short pearls of wisdom and I wanted to share #17 with you today:
-
If something looks irrational – and has been so for a long time – odds are you have the wrong definition of rationality.
The lesson is simple. Time tests ideas with remarkable efficiency. The newness of an idea is correlated inversely with the likelihood that it will survive for a long period of time.
When looking for truth in fitness (and in general) look first to the oldest ideas before putting stalk in newness. Good luck!
