“Chips on shoulders make chips in pockets,” he repeated. The tongue-in-cheek quip highlighted what this tech investor saw as the single common trait amongst successful entrepreneurs. No, it wasn’t intelligence or courage. It wasn’t charisma or technical skill. It was their experience with adversity.
Founders with a chip on their shoulder found a way to win.
Come to think of it. As I sat down to write this, I scanned my mind for outliers of performance in my mind. Anecdotally, they all had a difficult experience that informed their new success.
The point here is that, while it might not feel good in the moment, troubling times are specifically what make us great. If you’re in the midst of difficulty, know that your current pain will soon be an amenity to the best parts of you.
