One of the first fatal misperceptions of American health is that fitness is a thing you look like. If you perceive that fitness is a thing you see in the mirror, you’re sure to set out on an impossible journey of endless disappointment and misery.
With one small shift, this could be cured forever.
Imagine if when the average American thought about health and fitness, they first thought about what a person could do. What if instead of your doctor saying you need to lose 30 pounds, she simply said you need to be able to row two thousand meters in less than 9 minutes and add 20 pounds to your back squat?
It fitness is perceived as a capacity two things happen:
- Fitness becomes attainable, and
- People start to look fit, too.
That’s because form follows function.
We generally look like what we’re capable of doing. Why can’t the average American tie their shoes and run three miles right now? Twenty full range of motion push ups? What about a bodyweight back squat?
It seems so simple, but those capacities are very attainable for virtually any adult. Achieving them would change the world. How crazy is that?
