4 Reasons Why You Should Learn How to Flip a Tire

Would you believe that this entire list won’t have a typical “fitness” reason in it? No matter your age, gender, or fitness level, I can say confidently that you’d benefit greatly in your life by learning how to flip a tire. 

It’s not going to flip itself. 

I’ve taught strongman to the general population in more than a dozen countries and here are several reasons I think you should learn to flip a tire:

  1. Problem Solving. Learning how to flip a tire will, at best, give you principles to guide your effort. However, since every tire is different, you will never be “off the hook” to problem solve for yourself. This mimics life better than more controlled lifting environments. 
  2. Violence of Action. Like many of the strongman implements, you aren’t going to just follow directions to have success. In addition to what you’re doing, how you do it will matter, too. Having an attitude of conviction is a key life skill! 
  3. Patience. With a heavy enough tire, there is no violence of action that supersedes the need for patience when the tire is in the transition position at the hip. 
  4. Being a Student. Since the tire flip is a bit out of left field, you’ll likely have to subordinate yourself to a coach. Taking on the role of student assumes humility and vulnerability. The world needs more of that from you.
