There’s one major change in how we develop coaches at DEUCE Gym and I wish I’d done it earlier. It’s a rigorous process (and it’s always been). Frankly, DEUCE has become successful specifically because of this rite of passage that all coaches undergo that’s mostly hidden from view. It’s called Coach’s Prep.
It’s a process that creates unique levels of trust and willingness in the system.
Said differently, our coaches’ development process ensures that every person that works here wouldn’t rather be anywhere else in the world. We have the most dedicated and committed staff on the planet, but we made a mistake for a long time talking people into this line of work.
Instead, we try to talk everyone out of taking the plunge into Coach’s Prep. It’s not because we ultimately don’t want people to join the course. It’s an insurance policy against people being lured in by the idea of the job. Because, it’s definitely not that.
In fact, I think there’s a general truth here. Success and long term goals almost never look and feel the way you think they would. This is no different. Furthermore, if you’ve got a big hairy goal and you misinterpret what it would look and feel like to actually accomplish it, you might quit assuming you’re off course!
The message I want to share with anyone who is pursuing something big is this. Doing the thing will likely never feel like a success (even when you’re successful).
