Please excuse the nihilistic approach, but it’s true. Well, it’s not that today’s training doesn’t matter completely, it just only matters in the context of the days around it. Why, you ask?
Because, no one is getting fit today.
Fitness happens as a progression over time. Today’s training, then, only matters as much as you can string it to the next day, week, etc. In fact, it’s in the progression that your training days matter. Said more simply, today is mostly important as a single point to inform what weight will go on the bar next time or how fast you should run 400m next time.
I like sharing this information, because it’s good news. It takes the pressure off today. Sure, you should train hard and give a great effort today and it doesn’t matter as much as how you show up tomorrow.
