What’s with This Salt Era?

Ready for the drama.. A bunch decades ago some marketing people start talking smack on fat and salt. American’s were dying in record numbers from heart disease (and still are) and dietary fat became suspect number one and salt became culprit number two.

Salt isn’t the Boogeyman.

As a result, we got Margarine and low sodium processed foods. And, a bunch more heart disease. Michael Alderman is the editor of the American Journal of Hypertension and he had this to say about the anti-salt dilemma in the United States:

“They are based upon the hope that the blood pressure effect of lowering sodium would translate into a benefit in health. Opposition to these findings — which only adds to a substantial body of similar information — is that these folks have long held the faith that lowering sodium was a good idea. They have opposed randomized trials with the bogus argument that a randomized controlled trial would be too tough and expensive. Not so. They choose faith over science, but it’s not a theological issue.”

Americans should hear that both fats and sodium are essential to health. What used to be the boogeyman of heart health is now being added to our water bottles because not only did we remove it from our cupboards, essential minerals are gone from our topsoil thanks to monocrop agriculture.

It’s time we give up our fear of salt. We love our friends at LMNT for our thoughtful sources of sodium and electrolytes.
