Should You Finish a Book You Don’t Like?

People say you shouldn’t finish books you don’t like. It’s basically a time saver, right? Understand that your time is spent better on something else and move on.

I can’t do it.

I keep reading books that I hate and it’s cost me hours of my life I’ll never get back. I’m writing to you because I think there’s two ways to look at this question.

More than the truth, I believe you give the advice the person needs to hear.

Since I’ve got the put-your-head-down and grind through unenjoyable tasks part down, maybe the advice I need is to quit on books that suck. If you gave that advice to someone who rarely finishes books or has a squirrel-like attention span, it would likely paly into their compensations and not lead to growth. How I grow here is not by pushing through a bad reading experience.

You can see, though, a scenario where the best advice and important challenge to someone might be to “start what you finish” no matter what. I’m sure the truth lies somewhere outside of these two options, but instead the key is finding the advice that you need to hear.

What’s yours?
