Delegation Gone Wrong: The Over-Indexing of Talent

We shouldn’t do everything. But, we can

Maybe read that again, because it’s controversial. If we begin with the premise that human beings (and their brains) are malleable (SEE: growth mindset) versus the alternative that says that our attributes are generally solidified (SEE: fixed mindset), the world starts to look incredibly different.

Sure, delegation in and of itself is wildly important. Yet, strong delegation with the basic assumption that our own talents are far more nurtured than we’d like to give credit is my highest aim for you in reading this.

I see folks often outsourcing tasks to others from a place of deferring to talent, which can be unhelpful delegation. In fact, it’s avoidance. This is especially true when you outsource work to others that will, in fact, accomplish the task, but not because they possess some divine skill that you do not (or cannot possess). Instead, you just don’t like doing this sort of thing or struggle to have enough patience to see the task through.

Talent goes to the people that earn it.

In the long run, earning talent is better for everyone that delegation from a fixed mindset.
