Anytime you build constraints a fun game can emerge. Life, on the other hand, can feel, well… not so fun. It’s partially not fun when it all runs together. It’s infinite and confusingly so. That said, there’s nothing a simple constraint can’t handle.
I recently had a conversation with a business coach about a classic exercise that manipulates time as a constraint. He explained it like this:
“Say you work eight hours in the day on whatever is your work. Now, imagine tomorrow you’re constrained by doctors orders to only work two hours each day. Working a minute longer would be fatal. What then?”
Naturally, this constraint forces this issue on best practices, what stays, what goes, and I think we all are surprised at how much you could get done in less time. Now, you might be saying, “That doesn’t sound like fun. That sounds like optimization!”
Well, you’re right. But, now you’ve got six hours to have fun. Have at it..
