We can’t do much about everything, but we can do our best at a few things. A part of our regular, twice-daily duties at the gym, for example, includes a specific task that reads:
Check yard & facility perimeter for trash/debris
This means twice per day, one of us will search for and retrieve any litter, debris, or trash that has blown into the yard or the streets and sidewalks that surround the gym, including the alley. The idea, of course, is to make for a cleaner environment and subconsciously increase the care for and attention-to-detail for our home.
During the pandemic, the morale of the neighborhood (like many neighborhoods) declined. People were generally less connected, more anxious, and fearful. Therefore, strangers seemingly were less polite to each other and more prone to complain.
We loathe ‘Complainer Culture’.
We’ll define a culture of complaint as a culture where complaining becomes the dominant currency over commitment. So, when people start complaining about homelessness, for example, we start a non-profit that aims to address homelessness. (SEE: commitment)
When we heard complaining sentiments about the status of our street, we decided we’re just one funny name and a big human effort away from fighting a culture of complaint. This is how “The cleanest street in Venice” was born.
Each month we add a massive group neighborhood clean up to our additional perimeter sweeps and crown ourselves the “Cleanest Street in Venice”. It’s been a big hit (and, not surprisingly, no one has challenged us for the title). People show up in droves to pick up an ungodly amount of trash and DEUCE demonstrates commitment in the face of complaint as a result.
Then, Helsinki joined us.
Former Hold the Standard Summit graduate, Jesse Saastamoinen, sent me some photos. His gym community in Helsinki, Finland called CrossFit Vantaa did their first clean up, which obviously makes their street the ‘cleanest street in Helsinki’.
You get the idea. So, naturally, we’ve decided to blow this up. The outcomes here can only be positive and so we’re going to see how many cities we can get commitments from. You’ll be supported with digital marketing assets and guidance along the way. I bet this will do a lot of good. Email me at logan@deucegym.com to claim your city now!
This is your formal invitation.
