Do you ever notice that the books get written after the war? That’s because when you’re fighting for your life, you’re too busy with the immediacy of the task for book writing. Remember, all the maxims and adages get told outside of the throughs of the tragedy that informs them. All the rigumroll about “tenacity” and the value of adversity is peacetime conversation.
I’m not knocking it, either. Reflection after turbulent times is what fills us with sage insights. These are the insights you teach your kids about and become cliches.
Built inside of this seemingly obvious observation is an overlooked fact, however. The fact is when you’re in a flat out dogfight in your life, there are no short quips to get you through. It’s just you.
What good is a maxim like, “Pressure makes diamonds” if you’ve just been taking their word for it? When the pressure is on, it won’t feel like a figure of speech. It will feel like pressure.
I get that you know hard times make us better. But, knowing won’t help the hardness of the matter. The bad news is your favorite quotes won’t save you when disaster strikes. The good news? You will.
