The Crow and the Pitcher

Whether you’ve heard the story or not, you surely know the moral. The story was first told in the second century. Greek poet, Bianor, describes a crow’s precarious situation. The thirsty crow happens upon a pitcher with just enough water in the bottom to where its beak cannot reach it to drink. 

The young crow pushes and pushes on the pitcher in an effort to tip it over for a rewarding drink, but struggles. After failing over and over again to tip the pitcher, the crow switches strategies. One by one the thirsty crow places pebbles into the pitcher until the water is high enough to drink. 

After a brief round of applause for our thirsty crow, we ought to heed the lesson here. Precarious times reward ingenuity. Brute force works except when it doesn’t.
