Spotlight: Breaking Your Frame

Yesterday’s article asked the reader for his or her strategies to self-reflect with more honest accuracy. Since we’re all skewed towards a subjective view that downplays our weaknesses and over-emphasizes our strengths, it pays to have systems in place to make up for this bent frame.

I figured it would help to share one (of many) strategies we have in place at DEUCE to prevent our bias from running wild. We call this particular one: spotlight. It’s a staple section of our staff meeting where we decide to put a perfectly normal procedure, belief, or habit of ours into the spotlight where we force a dedicated effort to break it. This intentional effort to prove its ineffectiveness leads to either:

  1. A) further realization that it’s a good system or
  2. B) shines a light on something that we can improve.

Without this dedicated system, I can say without question that many of these topics would go on unchallenged as gospel, potentially to our own disfunction. I challenge you to out something you assume to be true and effective under the spotlight. Can you break it?
