“It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” – Epictetus
The famous scholar, Umberto Eco, has a personal library of more than thirty thousand books. That’s not a typo. It’s rumored that he mentally places visitors to his home into two categories. The first category includes the folks who come to his home and ask how many of the books he’s read. The second category, which is the minority by a large margin, are the kinds of individuals that inquire about the ones he hasn’t read. This is the group that gets it.
As Nassim Taleb says, “Read books are far less valuable than unread ones.”
The utility of a personal library isn’t in the idea that it’s a trophy room for what you already know. The library, rather, is only as useful as it’s full of that which you don’t know.
Concern your mind with your ignorance. After all, wouldn’t you be so lucky as to find out what you don’t know?
