Want Sustainable Fitness? Deepen the Reason

Something got you in the door. Abs, a lower cholesterol number, new confidence, or a new challenge was the spark. The reason why you came is a beautiful thing and thank goodness you had it. I’m here to challenge you, however. I worry that whatever it was that got you in the door isn’t deep enough to keep you here.

What we know is that life is going to deal some cards and when adversity strikes, feelings change, or the bank account looks slim, your reasons for being here might not cut it anymore. We often come in with somewhat superficial reasons for training in the first place, because you don’t know what you don’t know. After all, how could you know what an impact this little community at 110 Lincoln Blvd. could have on you? How could you have known that you’d like weightlifting (or gymnastics)? How could you know that fitness could be more than just a calories in and calories out game of sweat math?

Don’t punish yourself. Do something about it. Create a deeper meaning for your time here. By all means, if you showed up because you wanted abs, get yourself some abs. All I’m saying is when motivation is low or the times are tough, abs aren’t a great reason to stick it out. Deepen your reason for showing up. Whether it’s your classmates, the long road to movement mastery, or a deeper commitment to excellence, you’re going to need a reason to bear down.
