Coach Juan Earns Full Time Status

As many of you know, we have a very specific process for enrolling leadership at DEUCE Gym. Regardless of experience (or lack thereof), prospective coaches must enroll in our infamous Coach’s Prep program.

There’s no timeline on this program. Most quit and very few complete all three of the course’s levels. These student-coaches are immersed in a classroom setting each week amongst coaches trudging through fitness concepts, doing drills, and refuting arguments for and against certain concepts in strength and conditioning. In addition, each student-coach is assigned a class to assist and, subsequently, a mentor for weekly meetings. These assistant coaching efforts are critiqued word by word on a standardized evaluation form for a practical learning experience that often “makes or breaks” young student-coaches. Lastly, there is a three part testing element that begins as a timed written exam (Level 1), a verbal test (Level 2), and a practical evaluation of numerous full coaching experiences (Level 3).

Not only has Juan accomplished all this, he’s demonstrated an ability to navigate gym responsibilities with excellence and provide a leadership intangible that is required for a leader to ‘hold the standard’ at DEUCE Gym.

As you can imagine, something like this isn’t the first of its kind for Juan. He was a NCAA Division I stand out on the LMU Lion soccer team. He later tested his mettle at the notoriously grueling Officer Candidate School (OSC) as a United States Marine. After graduating OSC, Juan decided to return to the private sector where he coached high level youth soccer and did personal training.

Juan now maintains an extensive private training roster. He and his wife, Flor, reside in Venice and have one son, Lucas. Though he’s spent considerable amount of time around the gym in the past, you can look for him leading more classes, executing Intro Sessions, etc.

Please welcome Juan as a full time leader in our community and congratulate him. I know he’s going to continue to make us all better. Congrats, big man!
