Perspective is tricky. Looking at anything without scope makes actually understanding what it really is quite difficult. I’ll never forget a new student to the program pulling me aside to ask how long it took “her to look like that.” Of course, he was pointing at a member that had been training this way for seven years.
“I’m not sure. Years for sure…” wasn’t the answer he was looking for. He simply didn’t have scope for what training progress is like. With scope you can, at the very least, understand what your goals mean and what to expect.
This is my eleventh year participating in high level strength and conditioning (without any lapse) and I’m still wondering how to get strong and fit. Get committed to the process. Show up, do the work, and learn as much as possible. Enjoy the little milestones along the way, because you’re always going to need a little more patience than you’d like on this journey. I’ve been unhappy with my results for over ten years and that exactly why I’m still doing this.
