Ah, control. Everybody wants it, don’t they? Can you blame them? I think we can all relate to the desire to have some control. Heck, much of this rat race is full of variables and unknowns that can make the most sane of us falter. Well, let me in on a little secret..
You can have control. There’s one caveat, however, and that is that you can only truly have control of one thing and one thing only, and that is the almighty self.
Ok, maybe it’s not really any big secret at all, but with the way people act you’d think this stuff was far from common knowledge. You see, folks naturally want control, except they seek it in all the wrong places. The most guilty of this, whom we’ll call “control freaks,” seek to control everything around them. They want to manipulate situations. They want to control other people. They hoard information like it’s gold, because in a funny way, it feels like control.
The tough realization with this is two fold. If they are lucky, these “control freaks” begin to realize:
- They can’t control anything external (situations, people, perception, acceptance, etc)
- They’ve spent all their time outside themselves and zero time managing the one thing they can control.. themselves
Most won’t ever come to this realization, however. It’s cheesy, I know, but life is incredibly hard. To add to the difficultly, we’ve got to add other players into the game of life, and on top of that, we must take into account emotion. No wonder we get distracted.
No matter how long you look at the concept, or from what perspective, you’ll soon learn that control can only be found within yourself. You are a master of your destiny with effort and attitude. Time spent concerned with matters out of your control is time wasted. Are you a “control freak?” Great! It’s a perfect recipe for some introspection.
