I once heard a talk an Apple engineer had at a prestigious university campus. While positioned at one of the highest ranks of his company, he gave some suggestions to future, hopeful, software engineers. One of the highlights he shared was:
“Never stop acting like the new one on the team.”
Think back to your first week at your current team or company. Were you late on your first day? Did you complete all tasks on time? Did you greet all your coworkers with sincerity? Did you dress professionally? Did you ask a lot of questions with an intention to learn?
Fast forward to today. Have your habits changed now that you aren’t new anymore? Be honest and check yourself: Has complacency set in?
Listen, it’s okay. If you’re here now, then chances are, you are still employed. It’s not too late. The advice I encourage you to act on is, act like the new one on the team.
Go out of your way to help the operation. Be courteous to all those around you. Ask questions and listen intently. Be a student of your craft.
If you are “new” again, then sustain it for as long as you possibly can.
If you can sustain this “new employee” mindset, you just might be rejuvenated in all things work-related.
