All new recruits to the University of San Diego baseball program received a team issued ‘Workman Grey’ t-shirt. It was a XXL plain gray t-shirt. It had no logo, no numbers, and virtually no flattering characteristics. Like most things in the developmental nature of the program, it was a psychological tactic from the coaching staff to build culture.
You see, when you’re a Division I baseball recruit you’re surely a focused, driven individual. But, somewhere in the back of your mind you know that there’s another part of the game: flare.
There’s free stuff, swag, gear.. You get it. We’re talking five pairs of shoes, travel attire, multiple uniforms, free gloves, bats, the signature bag. It’s big time.
Yet, when you arrive on campus at USD, you received the ‘Workman Grey’. It popped your egotistical swagger bubble. It wasn’t cool. In fact, no human body could look good wearing it. It was humbling.
Sometimes fancy gear and pristine facilities can go to your head and you can miss the point. We were there to work.
Can you guess why we’re at DEUCE Gym?
