Stress makes the simplest of tasks more challenging. Take nasal breathing, for example. Not so bad when you’re sitting or lying down; increasingly more difficult when you’re running. Zoom out a bit and the same is true for interpersonal interaction. Easy when you’re rested, much harder when you’re sleep-deprived.
By this line of logic, it’d make sense to place a greater priority on rest to increase your readiness for interacting with other people throughout each day. But of course, as you already know, the perfect conditions don’t exist. And waiting on the sidelines until you feel “ready” will only keep you on the sidelines more often than not.
So, what gives then? How do you get better stepping into the arena amidst less-than-ideal circumstances?
Inspired by my conversation with Tim Brown on the latest episode of the DEUCE Racing podcast, who ever so eloquently articulated the heart of every person’s story – human struggle or human triumph – I’d encourage you to remember your shared connection to every other human on the planet the next time you experience stress that feels beyond your capacity to continue interacting.
As Tim says, “You’re not out to get them. You’re out to get them.”
Read that back once more if you need to. Can you see the difference now? We’re all out to get you – for the better! So please don’t forget it.
