Weightlifting: Attitude Isn’t an Intangible

There are times when I use the unforgettable experience of building a piece of IKEA furniture as a means to create context for weightlifting. See if you can follow me here.

Weightlifting is not like building IKEA furniture.

When you pull out the pages of instructions to transform your box full of parts into an armoire there is an understanding that if you have all of the right parts and do all of the right steps in the specific correct order then you’ll have a complete armoire at the end.

Weightlifting is not like building IKEA furniture because it cannot be reduced to performing the right movements in the right order. Weightlifting is about positions and sequence, but it’s also about an attitude. The attitude part isn’t a cherry-on-top, a bonus, or nice to have. Weightlifting is violent action and, yes, you must follow the steps, but how you follow the steps is as important as the steps themselves.
