Chance, Luck, and the Unknown Endings

My favorite part about anything competitive is that it’s not just about who is “better”. It’s about who can capture the moment now. If it weren’t, there would be no reason to play the game in the first place. If what happened in the arena was only about finding out who is best, we could often skip that part and just award the favorite the trophy and call it a day. Buster Douglas wouldn’t have needed to step into the ring. Tyson was the better fighter (with 4200 to 1 odds, mind you). The US Hockey Team wouldn’t have to lace up in Lake Placid. The Soviets were objectively more advanced. You get the idea.

This simple truth is precisely the opportunity that makes playing worth it in the first place. And, this fact isn’t just relegated to sport. Our lives have malleability. Uncertainty is our gift. Thank goodness we don’t live a deterministic existence, because if we did you’d know exactly how your life’s movie will end. What’s the point?

Since “the chips [do] fall where they may” there are two things worth noting:

1.You’re always in the game.

2.You can choose to affect positive change for your own benefit.

You’re never out of the fight and the opportunity of the unknown is an invitation to win the day. How do you win the day? It’s simple. Be better than yesterday.
