You know, they say it’s the “other twenty-three hours in the day” that make or break your health and fitness. At twenty-three to one, there’s a strong mathematical case to support that claim. This argument, though, is much more than a quantitative one.
When we speak with prospective members in their ‘Intro Session’, one of the things we describe is our model for development which begins with performance. It’s this coaching relationship where we lead you towards objective performance that is our reason for being. It’s what we do. How we do that, however, is in the context of a community. This community and the context we create is the container for pursuing fitness sustainably with us. That, my friends, gives us a chance at the Holy Grail of Fitness, which is lifestyle.
Lifestyle is the “other twenty-three hours in the day”.
Lifestyle is very much a qualitative force in your fitness journey of immeasurable value. It’’s who you’re around, what you talk about, and what occupies your mind. Imagine the millions of nudges away from health and fitness when you live, work, or play with people who aren’t enrolled in a pursuit of performance. You’d never be able to add up all of the micro shifts in your behavior as a result of the pressures or lack thereof in a lifestyle that hasn’t integrated fitness. Conversely, it’s likely not possible to add up the power of the rushing current underneath you when your lifestyle supports this pursuit.
I’ll share an observation. The folks who have the most success in training are the ones whose lives outside of the gym are in less and less contrast with their lives inside the gym. I’ll add that it doesn’t matter which comes first, either. However, the folks who are logging gym time to erase, mitigate, or support twenty-three other hours a day of debauchery, disrespectful sleep patterns, less-than-nurturing food habits, etc never catch up. At twenty-three to one, you can’t balance that lifestyle budget.
The moment you act differently outside the gym because of what you do in it rather than the other way around is the Eureka moment! And, as they say, “the rest is history.”
Keep going.
