I don’t know about you, but when someone tells me “it’s all mental” as the key to unlocking a challenge, I only find about 0.01% of that to be helpful. You know the eye roll emoji? Yeah. Accurate depiction of how I really feel about it.
That being said, I’m not here to just criticize what I find to be an unuseful, generic saying.
What I’d like to offer instead is a specific visualization tool that I use every time I find myself uncomfortable in an ice bath. You could do the same, or apply to any uncomfortable situation.
What I imagine is a book. Turning a page with each breath. Continuing to turn pages until I arrive at a blank page, or a more comfortable part in the “story”.
“It’s all mental” is only as useful as the tangible applications you have access to employ. Turning pages is a simple exercise in reframing.
Uncomfortable can become less uncomfortable. Or more comfortable. Or even, comfortable.
Your mind, your rules. But why suffer when you can savor?
