Evel Knievel Desire

After two days of business meetings, I’ve come to recognize (yet again) the power of desire. I’ll put my money on a human being that is blood thirsty for something, because I’ve seen the undoubtable power of desire time and time again. I want to be around a ferocity and desire that’s ready to brawl just to quench a thirst.

When an idea comes to me, I like to observe it in extremes to see how it plays out. Naturally, I dug into Evel Knievel. Unless you’ve lived under a rock, you’re familiar with the epic stunts by the man with the bedazzled outfit on a motorcycle. This is a man who risked his life at ever increasing odds to put on a more spectacular show is fueled by something. He knows desire.

In an interview in the late 1960s, Knievel said, “I don’t care if they say, ‘Look, kid, you’re going to drive that thing off the edge of the Canyon and die,’ I’m going to do it. I want to be the first. If they’d let me go to the moon, I’d crawl all the way to cape Kennedy just to do it. I’d like to go to the moon, but I don’t want to be the second man to go there.”

If we remove the details of how or what is to be done, my money is on the guy that will “crawl” his way to realize his desires. I’m interested in a desire that has no desire to concede in the face of death or otherwise. Call Evel Knievel whatever you want, but you can’t call him distracted. With a desire like his, could there be something else he ought to be doing?

I can’t imagine so.

What does this tell us? Well, it tells me that if there is a choice to pursue basic avenues or to pursue a desire like Knievel’s to ride off a cliff at sixth gear with pride, I want some of the latter.
