Let’s be honest. There isn’t a better motivator for quality movement than increased performance. We can talk about safety and form all we want, but at the end of the day, people are motivated by results. History has shown that people, athletes especially, are willing to make substantial sacrifices to win, even when it comes to health, security, reputation, or otherwise. In that way, life rarely rewards “the hard way” with instant gratification. Many times, unfortunately, we are naturally pinned between a rock and a hard place…
“Do I do things right and get what I want later? Or, do I sacrifice integrity to get what I want now?”
Luckily for us in fitness, these two things are one and the same. In fact, performance-wise it’s the right way that wins, especially with top end performers. In that world, you can’t win if you cut corners. Attention to detail with quality movement isn’t the hard way at all. It is, most literally, “the easy way.” And, in a world were it’s all too often one or the other, I’m grateful.
The ability to do more work faster is the name of the game, and in strength and conditioning we can begin to bridge the gap between diligence as a means to our performance driven ends. In fact, strength and conditioning punishes haste, cutting corners, and unsafe movement.
As these two ideas (performance and quality of movement) overlap, we have the most beautiful two-birds-one-stone example. Stay motivated to win, and practice quality of movement to get there.
