I was fortunate enough to spend this past Sunday with local gymnastics expert and coach, Dusty Hyland, of DogTown CrossFit. The event was incredible, with all different skill levels present and athletes coming as far away as Korea and South Africa.
In general (for CrossFitters), the workshop was a fairly high skill event. The topics of discussion were the strict muscle up, the shoulder stand on rings, and handstand push up on the rings. Considering the advanced nature of some of these movements, I was delighted but not surprised to hear the coaches talk about the most basic of positions.
Gymnastic skill, like skill in virtually any domain, looks like a pyramid. The largest segment of basic skills are at the bottom and support the more rare, high skill elements that stand on top of them. Without the foundation, conversation of the skills higher on the pyramid is moot.
Completing a muscle up to handstand push up on the rings is no small task, but doing it successfully depends heavily on competency in simple skills like finding hollow body, the basic push up, and the handstand.
Make position your priority and earn endless opportunity for skill advancement. Good luck!
