I’ve seen it a million times. Guy or gal grinds through a successful (but challenging) lift and wants to make one more attempt. No problem there. Then, they walk over and grab 10s like we’re still warming up.
Uhh, hold your horses.
A twenty pound jump is for those no—doubt-about-it early sets. This is crunch time, partner. You’ve got to make friends with change plates. We’re talking two-and-a-halfs, fives… hell, grab one pound plates.
New lifters need to make friends with change plates. Period.
For every missed lift because of an inappropriate jump in weight is one or two made lifts that will build capacity and reinforce quality position. If there’s one thing new lifters can do this year to reap more gains, it’s to trust small weight jumps… (tiny even).
