Did you know that the older an idea is, the longer you can expect it to continue to live? That sentence is either extremely obvious or incredibly insightful. This phenomenon is known as the Lindy Effect.
Now, juxtapose the Lindy Effect with a classic marketing truth. Newness is one of the most powerful drivers in consumer behavior. In the fitness industry, this is especially true, which creates the perfect cycle for new fads to emerge, take hold, fall apart, and repeat.
The since closed local clothing brand, General Admission, had a great bumper sticker that read:
“Respect your elders and do your research.”
If the oldest ideas will live longest and the newest ideas will die the quickest, we might as well get to know our elders in the game and do our research. After all, that’s the key to the future.
