Macro vs. Mirco Problem Solving Explored

First, you’ll need to identify what kind of rut you’re in. Most people have a preferred style of rumination. Once you know that, we’ll know how to get you unstuck.

Are you the kind of person that misses the forest for the trees? You’re fretting over small details while the point is being missed?

Not you? The other type of rumination is the big picture worrier. You can’t be bored with details when there’s a catastrophe (in your head) to deal with. Naturally, you don’t get anything done because, well, the details are where actual things get done.

Have you chosen your favorite type of rumination yet?

Great! Now, do the opposite.

If you’re constantly stuck in the weeds of your problem, change the scenery. Look at your problem from the balcony. Taking the macro perspective can help you see the obvious way out of the maze you’ll never escape when you’re too close to the action.

If you’re stuck in the clouds, take on Anne Lamont’s famous “one inch frame.” Think micro! What can you do about this one thing? What can you only do today? String some details together and you’ll soon be in a different place.

Good luck!
