A Classic Time Management Framework Deconstructed

Once you’ve seen this time management model, you simply cannot unsee it. It’s called the Eisenhower Matrix and it’s named after President Eisenhower.  Previous to his run as the 34th American President, the five-star general is recognized as the commanding general responsible for winning World War II.

His time management matrix has become a nearly household concept. A quote from a speech he gave in 1954 describes it’s essence aptly:

“I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.”

If you’re reading this, I don’t need to know the details of your life to feel strongly in my recommendation that you need to do a better job giving time and attention to the important, but not urgent items in your life.

This is a trap.

The urgent and unimportant items in your life will always be vying for your time and attention. Ironically, the big life outcomes you want are almost all important, but not urgent.

Focus.
