Another Case for Constraints

Life is a vast, overwhelming ocean. If you want to get things done, get creative, or have a good time, build constraints.

There’s nothing practical (or fun, for that matter) about having infinite time and space to do whatever.

This is, afterall, how games are created. Even if you aren’t a poet, you can make painting interesting by shrinking it down from an endless sea of possibilities. Make rules like “each poem must be done in twenty seconds or less.” Right away, poetry becomes fun, curious, and forgiving.

Need a game with your child? It’s tag, but you can’t run “normal”! Struggling with productivity? Make a rule that you’re only allowed to work for the first forty minutes of any hour! I bet the intensity of your work would change!

If any part of life feels overwhelming, insert man-made constraints and everything gets better!
