E.T. Phone Home, Big Cash, and Missed Opportunities

Can you name the first formal example of product placement in a major motion picture? There are massive deals that go on behind the scenes that influence what you see on screen. Did you really think that those Ray Bans in Risky Business were just a freebie? Also, Pizza Hut isn’t just Garth and Wayne’s favorite pizza in Wayne’s World. Pizza Hut paid for that.

Any guesses?

The first deal is famous for not just being the first deal. In fact, the first offer was refused by M&M/s to be the official “ET phone home” candy. When they turned it down, Reese’s Pieces jumped in and agreed.

Now, all these years later, Reese’s is forever cemented in cinema history and rumors have circulated that a spike in sales to the tune of 70% was part of the windfall from this historic agreement.

What’s the lesson here? We’re all specifically not seeing the value in something in front of us. Do some basic inventory with the assumption that you’re missing an opportunity. You might just reevaluate and see it differently.
