Heroism Ain’t No Accident

We use the word “hero” a lot. In real life and on the big screen we see examples of heroes all the time. And there is little in common between the woman who lifts a car to save her child and Iron Man who flies around shooting laser beams out of his hands. However, the one thing they do have in common is that neither of them set out to be heroes. In fact, most heroic acts take place when a situation is thrust upon someone and they must decide to act.

Take Charles Lightoller, for example. A name probably none of you know but nonetheless a true hero. Lightoller was the second officer on the Titanic and he stayed on board helping get people to safety until the boat fully sank and he became trapped in a room under water. Until a boiler explosion somehow freed him and he was able to surface, thus surviving the whole ordeal. You would think that would be enough excitement for one lifetime but 28 years later, Charles decided to volunteer for the British Armed Forces during WWII. He then proceeded to captain a ship into the historic Battle of Dunkirk where he saved 122 soldiers during a deadly attack on the beach.

This was a man who never set out to do heroic things but when he found himself in situations that required extraordinary effort, he was ready. Through his training, preparation, quality of character and with a little bit of luck he was prepared to act and be of service to others.

There’s the old adage: Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. There will be a time in your life when more is required of you than you could imagine and when that time comes, will you be ready to act? Because no one sets out to be a hero but sometimes a situation calls for one. Not to say you have to put your life on the line, rather, are you willing to be of service?

Charles was ready and a great number of people are thankful because of it.

Stay ready.
