Fried Chicken and Perseverance

Success is one of the hardest things to convey to people. We talk about it all the time and we are shown snapshots of it daily in our lives and through different social media outlets. We are bombarded with amazing feats of triumph and incredible performances that make us feel like, “Hey that could be me one day.” However, what makes it so hard to convey and describe is that we will never understand the journey that an individual takes to reach that level of success. We see the finished product and it rarely does justice to the work that was required to achieve it.

Take the food chain KFC for example, there’s like a million of them all around the world. Everybody knows about the Original Recipe and the cute little picture of a white-haired colonel on every bucket of chicken. The restaurant has been wildly successful since its inception in 1952 and undoubtedly a huge success for Harland Sanders and his family. But would you have guessed that Sanders was generally a failure at everything he did up until his 60’s? I mean this guy worked every job from an engine stoker on trains to a lawyer to a failed restauranter. The idea of a world-renowned fast food chain probably never entered his mind but the guy didn’t quit and he eventually found success at the age of 62. That’s what we like to call playing the long game.

There is no clear path to success and it requires a whole lot more than just hard work. It takes vision and desire and a resilience that is hard to put into words. And if you think you know the fastest or best way to achieve something great in this life, odds are you’re just taking your best guess. Everyone’s journey will look different and you will be presented with obstacles completely unique to you but if you want something bad enough you will have to find a way to overcome them.

My best advice… become immune to failure. Embrace the tough times as learning opportunities and persevere forward onto the next task. Suffering is a necessary element in our lives that acts like a wave giving us the opportunity to ride it or be crushed by it.

Keep going, keep going, keep going!
